Unlike in most other western societies, manual labor and crafts are still regarded as a dignified, even glamorous way to make a living in France. While many other countries couldn’t wait to send all the craftsmen packing by outsourcing and farming out all the manual labor to overseas countries (such as China), in France you can still witness how many people stick to their manual skills and are still able to make a decent living utilizing those skills.
Here is one example that melted my heart when I saw it. Here is the man who is hard at work creating a brand new contrabass (or double-bass, or upright bass as this instrument is known in the English speaking world). Look at it, isn’t that the most amazing display of manual crafty skills:
